Margaret Mitchell's Death
I turned on the television last night and there was a show about Margaret Mitchell. I couldn't remember the circumstances of her death so I did a little digging. Margaret Mitchell was the beloved author of Gone with the Wind. She was born November 8, 1900. On August 11, 1949 she and her husband, John Marsh were jaywalking on Peachtree Street in between 13th and 14th Street on the way to see Canterbury Tales at the Peachtree Arts Theater. Witnesses said she walked into the street without looking and had been known to do this. Hugh Gravitt was the off duty taxi cab driver that struck and killed Margaret Mitchell. She died five days later on August 16. Officers said they smelled alcohol on his breath. He said he had a beer or two hours before and was on the way to the pharmacy to get medicine for his step-son. It was reported that he was driving 35-50 in a 25 mph zone and dragged her body 10 feet. He had 16 or more traffic convictions in the five years prior to the accident. He said he didn't see them since the car in front of him blocked his view. At the time jaywalking was a problem and some other motorists who hit jaywalkers weren't charged. It is odd how the medics let Margaret lie in the street face down and didn't give her aid. He served 10 months and 20 days in Bellwood Prison. His daughter Gloria Gravitt Moulder wrote a book called Bargain with a Devil: The tragedy behind Gone with the Wind in which she disputes many of the facts in the case. I confess I am left with more questions than answers. I found Hugh Gravitt's headstone at Haw Creek Cemetery, in Cumming, Georgia.
